A new painting for me, so I thought I’d show it off here on my blog. I spotted this American pika while hiking on Mount Rainier last summer, and the memory stuck. Pika and marmots are two of my favorite cute, higher-elevation critters. Although it looks similar to a mouse, they’re much bigger and are members of the rabbit/hare family.

I’ve been painting a lot lately, somehow finding time with all the other stuff life throws at us. I’m getting a kick out of painting hiking memories, like this acrylic on board.

This little guy was gathering grasses for his winter cache. They don’t hibernate and rely on their season’s supply of herbs and grasses to get them through the cold winter months. They’re well adapted for the alpine climate with dense fur. You’ll generally hear a pika before seeing them. Their high pitched whistle acts as a warning call to other pikas in their colony – “watch out, someone’s coming.”

This painting is available for sale. I have it in this custom frame and mat. It’s about 12″ x 15″ on the outside with a triple custom mat. It’s under glass. I’m offering it for $295 with a bit of shipping (usually Priority mail). If you’re interested, just email me at nancy@nancycherryeifert.com.

Thanks for reading.
