American Pika

The lake wasn’t frozen, that was just the name of it. At Sunrise, the alpine portal on the northeast side of Mount Rainier, these pikas seemed to be everywhere – collecting grass for their winter stores. This one just sat there giving its signature shreek of dismay to warn everyone else of me, the intruder.

Our Little Campground Host

I have fond memories of our little campsite host, a golden-mantled ground squirrel, at Lake Wenatchee last summer. He was living in the log bordering our site. Very friendly and entertaining, as most critters in campgrounds tend to be, looking for handouts. Now his memory lives on in this painting I just finished.
